Pick your lead width first
- 0.5 mm — the standard. Fine writing, technical notes, neat handwriting. Most popular.
- 0.7 mm — darker line, less breakage, good for note-takers who press hard.
- 0.9 mm / 2 mm — sketching, drafting, engineering drawings.
Best 0.5 mm — Pentel Twist-Erase III
Generous twist-up eraser (you rarely need a separate one), perfect grip, durable. The pen most architects and engineering students keep clipped to their pocket.
Best 0.7 mm — Faber-Castell Grip Plus
Rubberised triangular grip, no hand fatigue over long sessions. Built like a small tank.
Best 2 mm draughting pencil — Camlin Master Drafting
Pair with a lead pointer (also stocked) for traditional drafting work. Engineering students still use these.
Best budget option — Doms Click
Under ₹50, lasts a year of daily school use. Replacement lead and eraser are everywhere.
Lead grades to know
- HB: default, all-round
- 2B / 4B: darker, smoother, sketching favourites
- H / 2H: lighter, harder, drafting and outlining
